HENDERSONVILLE – The Beech (13-9/3-5) boys basketball team has had a rough go of it for the last few weeks and tonight they ended the frustration with an impressive 56-47 win over Station Camp (15-6/5-3) Friday night.
“We made a lot of plays to win, but we also made some plays that could have lost it. But, our kids, every time they made a bad play seemed to respond with a good one,” said Beech coach Kippy Brown.
The first half was nip and tuck all the way as no team had more than a 3 point lead. It was 11-11 at the end of quarter and 20-20 at the half. Shane Freeman led the first half scoring for Beech with 5 points. Kavon Blankenship had 6 for the Bison.
The Bucs surged ahead in the third quarter led by Luke Fleming’s 7 points. The Bucs did a great job of eliminating second chances for the Bison all night but particularly in the third quarter. Kristian Shaw hit a big three and Hunter Alexander played well defensively blocking a couple of shots as well.
Station Camp fought back in the fourth and tied the game at 39 with a minute to play Blankenship driving to the basket and scoring 7 fourth quarter points. Trey Moore dropped in a big three as well. The game ended at 43 all as Station Camp’s game winner was ruled after the buzzer.
To OT we went, Beech scored the first 8 points of the period and coasted to a 56-47 win. “The 8-0 run was huge in overtime for us,” added Brown. “I can’t say enough about these guys tonight. If we can play hard like this and take care of the ball and defend, I like our chances against a lot of teams.”
“I know they’ve had a rough time lately and they came out tonight and played hard, with energy and toughness. That’s what high school basketball is all about. You know on paper we probably should have won that game but those kids didn’t play that way and that’s a credit to them and their coaching staff,” said Station Camp coach Seth Massey. “They’ve got a good team, hopefully they can build off this, it’s a tough matchup for us.”
