Bucs reach quarterfinals for 9th time in school history

The 1981 and 82 football teams reached the quarterfinal round – at that time there were only four rounds with 16 teams participating in each class (district champions only got in), so the quarterfinal round was the second round – in 1981 we lost to Kingston 21-0 and in 1982 we lost in a muddy rainstorm 17-12 to Cleveland, who went on to be the state runner-up that year. In 1985 TSSAA allowed teams from each of the 16 districts make the football playoffs – still just 3 classes… There were many really good teams who did not make the playoffs before this change. In 1993 the TSSAA went to 5 classes and teams went into “regions”. In 1997 the TSSAA split to public and private. It became much easier to make the playoffs as they took 3 teams from each “region” instead of just the top 2, the first few years and then expanded to 4 teams so the #1 seeds would have a game instead of a bye week… from the beginning of the 5 round playoff system Beech is 4-2 in the third (quarterfinal) round of the playoffs. In 1995 we beat Westwood 25-9. Our next appearance was 14 years later, in 2008 and we lost to Hillsboro 42-21 after losing Wesley Aiello and Justin Allen to inury. In ‘09 we faced nemisis and county foe Gallatin. The Green Wave had beaten us 7-0 in the regular season, but our Bucs were a team of destiny that year. Winning a very hard fought game, 32-29. In 2011, on the road at HHS we fell 23-22 in another hard fought game. 2012…. The Bucs went 15-0 and won the state title again, but it wasn’t easy… the quarterfinal game with Clarksville NE may be the most exciting game ever played at Shackle Island Stadium. A 44-43 win thanks to a Lincoln Kenitzer QB sneak and a Jalen Hurd two point PAT with 51 seconds left. It was the defacto state championship game. 5 years later, on the road in 2017, Kaemon Dunlap ran for 209 yards and 3 TD to lead the Bucs to the win and eventual state runner-up spot. Friday we meet the Spartans again, this time at Shackle Island Stadium. Go Bucs! Get your tickets here:
