The Lady Buc soccer team fell to Page 3-2, losing in the Penalty Kick round of OT. In a very fast paced game, the Lady Bucs trailed at the half 1-0 after Page scored at the 37’ mark. With 15 minutes left, Hailey Burroughs heads one in to tie the game at 1. Savannah Jarret made a great save on a breakaway to keep the game tied, however, the Patriots scored a few minutes later to make it 2-1 with about 7 minutes left.
The Lady Bucs answered less than a minute later to tie it at 2 as Julia Smith knocked one home and the game stayed that way ‘til the buzzer sounded. Both teams continued at a torrid pace as they headed into overtime. Playing two scoreless 10 minutes periods of OT, they headed into “Golden Goal” (Sudden Death – anyone scores they win). The Golden Goal period was also scoreless and the game went to penalty kicks.
Nobody likes penalty kicks, but that’s how its done… Page’s first two kicks sailed wide of their target but the Bucs could not take advantage of the misses and were outscored 3-2 and lost one game away from what would have BHS’s first trip to the TSSAA State Soccer Tournament. Despite the loss, the Lady Bucs had a great season to finish at 13-7-2.
“The girls gave everything they had. We just missed a couple of opportunities to win. That’s the game sometimes… and it’s tough,” said Coach Cooke. Cooke added, “I’m extremely proud of our season and what our girls accomplished. Sure, I feel like we should be playing Wednesday and the loss on Saturday is still heavy on me. But, I love these girls and the effort they gave myself and each other all season.”
