XC competes in Southern Showcase in Huntsville, AL
On Saturday, the cross country team traveled to Huntsville, AL, to compete in the second annual Southern Showcase. The meet contained many of the top groups and individuals in the southeast. Huntsville High School won the boys division, scoring just 40 points, with Beech finishing in 10th place. Brentwood won the team title with 42 points on the girl’s side, with the Lady Bucs placing 11th.The boy’s team was led by junior Blake Brown, who ran 16:28, to place him fourth on Beech’s All-Time list. He was closely followed by sophomore Ethan Lanning in 16:29 (fifth all-time), freshman Gabriel Cox in 16:33 (sixth all-time), and sophomore Tristan Gould in 16:44 (10th all-time). “My favorite thing about the race was seeing my teammates run well. I was motivated to run fast because I wanted to do my best for the team,” said Lanning. Freshman Zaely Tilt placed first for the Lady Bucs in 20:13, which puts her as the fifth fastest Buccaneer in school history. She was closely followed by a tight-knit Beech pack. Junior Lexie Lawson, who placed seventh on the team last week, was the second Beech finisher in Huntsville. “Good coaching, a great night of sleep, and a positive mindset helped me run well,” Lawson said.
Coach Wietecha was pleased with the teams’ showing. “Most races, we don’t worry about chasing a time or keeping a certain pace, we focus on competing and catching the next person in front of us. But I wanted the athletes to have some fun and chase fast times for this race, and that’s exactly what they did.”The cross country team next competes at the Sumner County Championships on September 29th, where they will be looking to defend the boys and girls team titles they won last season.
