Bucs fall to Powell on last second TD Pass
Powell, TN – The big question for all high school coaches tonight was “what are we going to look like?” With all the problems presented by Covid-19 this year, no scrimmages, there isn’t one coach who really knew what to expect. Beech gave up two quick touchdowns and was down 14-0 three minutes into the game.
After giving up a Fernando Frances 27 yard touchdown run, Beech let a pooch kick fall and the Panthers fell on the ball and had first and ten at the Bucs 45 yard line. Jayden Collins hauled in a 34 yard pass in it was 14-0 with 8:19 left in the quarter.
Beech took advantage of a bad punt snap and took posession at the Panther 44 yard line. 5 plays later Kevin Figueroa knocked home a 37 yard field goal to make it 14-3. Just after the Bucs kicked off there was an hour and fiften minute lightning delay.
“The delay was beneficial to us, we got everyone calmed down. We learned a lot of things we would normally learn in scrimmages tonight. I thought we got better as we went the whole night,” said Beech coach Anthony Crabtree.
After the delay things changed, the Bucs defense was better and Adrian Johnson cashed in from 3 yards out to make it 14-10 with 8:05 left in the half. The Bucs would shoot themselves in the foot with two fumbles in the first half.
Powell took the second one at the Beech 18 yard line but the defense stop the Panthes inside the five and force a field goal attempt which was wide left and it was 14-10 at the half.
Beech got the ball to start the second half and the Panthers pooched it again and the Bucs drove down inside the 30 before Powell intercepted their second pass of the game. Powell drove 78 yards and Frances walked it in from 4 yards out to make it 20-10 as the PAT was wide left.
“We could have packed it up after they went up 20-10, but our kids played their tails off, they were invested. I am very proud of the way we played,” added Crabtree. The Bucs were stopped on 4 downs at the Powell 30 yard line.
Adrian Johnson finished off a 12 play 66 yard drive with a 5 yard touchdown run with 8:57 left in the game. The defense stopped Powell at their 46 yard line after another bad snap on a punt forced the kicker to run for his life.
Ten plays later Tysean Jefferson powered in from the one yard line to put Beech up 24-20 with 1:12 left in the game. Powell returned the kickoff to the 22 yard line and mixed in fifteen, ten and eighteen yard pass completions. The Panthers cashed in on second and ten pass from Jordyn Potts to Ayden Greene with twenty nine seconds left from the Beech 29 yard line to go up 26-24. The two point try failed.
Beech fell on the kickoff at the thirty five with five seconds left. Jefferson took off 45 yards and was one man away from the win. So close. “Our guys did a good job of never giving up, getting better through the whole game, we got stuff to work on but I think we have a pretty high ceiling. This team can be much better and if they keep working like they have been we will be in good shape,” added Crabtree.
The Bucs will travel to Henry County next week for a 7pm cdt contest in Paris, TN.
