Lady Bucs upset by Station Camp

HENDERSONVILLE – Station Camp did what no other team has done this year, beat Beech on their home court. . “Both teams played really good defense and took each other’s offense away. We wanted to put pressure on their guards. They have been shooting lights out and we wanted to take that away,” said Station Camp coach Miranda Cravens. Beech’s Kristy Utley agreed, “both teams played tough defense and neither of us really did much offensively. They just did a little more tonight than we did.”
The game got off to a slow start as both teams struggled to break through the other’s defense for points. At the end of one period the Lady Bucs led 10-7.
Beech jumped up 13-9 and had a chance to score again on a JC Swafford steal but ended up turning it over and Station Camp proceeded to go on a 10-0 run to lead 19-13. Shiya Hoosier missed a three point attempt with 13 seconds left but tipped the ball away to Kennedy Powell who made a layup with a second left on the clock. At the half SC led 19-15.
The second half started with 3 consecutive Lady Bison turnovers but Beech could only manage one bucket to cut the lead to 19-17. The Lady Bucs battled back to take a 23-22 lead on a Powell jumper with 4 minutes remaining in the third quarter as the intensity continued to build. “We talked about getting second chances at the half, we just couldn’t get any offensive rebounds,” added Utley.
The Lady Bucs 10-0 run put them up 27-22 but Station Camp responded with a 7-0 run to end the third quarter up 29-27. Kendra Mueller and Hoosier picked up their third fouls as Mueller sat much of the quarter.
Station Camp picked up a technical foul on the bench at 6:47 and Powell sank two free throws to make it 29 all. Beech surged ahead on a Mueller’s three point play the old fashioned way at 36-32 with four minutes remaining in regulation.
With just under three minutes to play Station Camp regained a 37-36 lead. The game went back and forth the rest of the way until Olivia Delk’s layup put the Lady Bison up 41-40.
A Lady Buc turnover with :48 seconds left turned out to be the play that allowed Station Camp to keep the upper hand as the game wound down to zero. Marissa Wirtz’s six point fourth quarter led the way.
The Lady Bucs (17-5/7-1) were 11-14 from the line in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough as Station Camp (14-6/5-3) won 45-42 “We’ve struggled with our free throw shooting, but I’m very proud they stepped up and made them when we needed them at the end tonight. It’s really tough to win at Beech, I’m just very proud of the girls,” added Cravens. Utley added “We will try to make something good out of this loss, you hate to lose, but we’ll try to turn it into a positive,”
