HENDERSONVILLE – The Beech Lady Buc soccer team (3-5/0-0) opened 2018 district play with a 4-3 victory over the Lady Tigers (3-3/0-1) of Macon County. Having beaten Gallatin 2-1 last Tuesday, the Lady Bucs were looking to put a win streak together and start the district season on a good note. Macon Co. came into the game with a 3 game win streak and ready to avenge a 3-1 loss to the Lady Bucs last season.
“We got the result we wanted, but we certainly were exposed as not being quite as good as the hype surrounding this team has been”, said BHS’s coach John Ferguson. “It’s tough, when we play like we have talked about all throughout the preseason until now, we got everything we wanted but we just didn’t put them away. And I think because we didn’t convert our opportunities we reverted back to one on one, go on our own and it doesn’t work.”
Emily Hickman got the momentum going early scoring just one minute into the game off a rebound of her own shot to make it 1-0. The Lady Bucs held a huge possession advantage in the first half and controlled play until Kendra Mueller broke through from 22 yards out at the 19 minute mark of the first half to make it 2-0 Lady Bucs.
Five minutes later Macon County scored on a breakaway by Cathryn Kemp. Kemp beat two Lady Buc defenders and blasted it into the net to make the score 2-1 Beech. The Lady Bucs continued to control play until a lightening delay at 7:31 in the first half. After the 30 minute mandatory waiting period Lady Tigers scored on a laser from 35 yards out by Jamie Ashburn on the right wing to tie the game at 2 with 6:38 left in the first half.
The second half was almost a carbon copy as the Lady Bucs continued to pepper shots on goal. Macey Croft connected from 20 yards out at 35:31 to put the BHS squad up 3-2. Macon County only crossed mid field 4 times in the second half with possession of the ball but seemed to capitalize on every Lady Buc mistake. Cathryn Kemp took control of a Beech turnover and blasted it past the goalie to tie the game again at 3 with 24:36 remaining in the contest. Kemp had two goals for the Tigers.
The Lady Bucs many times settled for shots from 25 to 30 yards out as Macon County packed all eleven players into the 18’ box at times. This frustrated Coach Ferguson as he continued to tell the girls to keep trying to work the ball in closer throughout the contest. “When you have a chance to put together one or two more passes and have a tap in at the back post why would you settle? I just don’t understand it… we will work on that in practice for sure”, added Ferguson.
Emily Hickman got the game winner from 20 yards out off a cross from Kendra Mueller with 9:05 left in the game. Hickman had two goals for the Buccaneers. Beech will host Springfield on Thursday night at 6pm in another 9AA game at Nathan Johnson Stadium.
