State Championship Game Primer
On Thursday, BHS will play in its third championship game in nine years. This year’s foe will not be Columbia Central, whom the Bucs have beaten twice in the title game. Knox Catholic, one of the few remaining private schools in Division I sports in the state of Tennessee will meet our Bucs on a cold and probably wet field in Cookeville, TN at 7pm to determine the 2017 5A State Football Champion. The Irish have averaged 43.1 points a game this year while giving up 27.9.
While their record may not seem impressive a closer look at the losses tell us a different story. Loss #1 occurred to Maryville by a score of 49-42 on opening night. Maryville is in the 6A title game and have won 15 state titles, 11 of those since 2000.
Loss #2 was to Eagles Landing Christian Academy from McDonough, Georgia by a score of 55-10. The Chargers are 11-0 and in the semifinals of the Georgia Private School Playoffs on Friday. Loss #3 was to Brentwood Academy 50-14 in week 6 of the season. BA is in the finals of the D2 Large Division on Saturday and undefeated at 11-0 as well. Take those three losses out of the picture and the entire dynamic of the Knox Catholic season changes.
With about a 60/40 percentage of run/pass offense and a huge offensive line led by D1 commit Cade Mays the Bucs will have their hands full and then some. This will be without a doubt the very best team we have played in 2017. Soddy Daisy played the Irish as close as anyone in 5A competition in a 49-48 loss, but most other games have been lopsided in nature. Our Bucs have their hands full and will need a tremendous effort, mistake free and opportunistic play to win this game. We need all hands on deck – get your tickets and get to Cookeville – BE ROWDY, BE LOUD!!
Last 5 years – Knox Catholic is 52-15
