Basketball opens at Brentwood
The Lady Bucs opened the 2017 season with a 72-57 win over Brentwood last night in a TSSAA Hall of Fame game at Brentwood HS. The Lady Bucs were led by Jana Claire Swafford who shot 70% (7-10) on the night and scored 20 points. Kennedy Powell added 15 on 70% shooting as well. Mia Dean chipped in 13 and Shiya Hoosier had 9 for the navy and orange squad.. HC Kristi Utley told BA.com, “the girls showed a bunch of energy and improvement from off season work . It was a great start to the season for us.”
Dean dished out 6 assists and had 8 rebounds to round out a solid game one effort. Powell led the Lady Bucs with 9 boards. The team shot 48% (29-61) from the field, including a 50% clip from behind the arc. The Lady Bucs jumped out to a 17-6 first quarter lead and never looked back as they led at the half 38-20, combining hot shooting and great rebounding (37-28 advantage) to post their first win of the season.
The Lady Bucs will be back in action on Saturday at BHS vs White House JV at 11 and varsity at 1.
In the nightcap, Brentwood beat the Bucs 59-54 despite Jayson Brown’s 19 pts on 7-10 shooting for the night. No other Buc recorded double figures on the night. Drake Sanson had 9 pts on 3-5 shooting behind the arc and Mitchell Sorenson and AJ Robertson each pitched in 7 pts. The Bucs shot well (14-24) from 2pt range but only hit 6 of 17 3’s and 8 of 15 free throws in the contest. The Bruins won it from the foul line hitting 15 of 21 tries. The boys will play White House at 2:30 and HCA at 4pm on Saturday after the girls games are over.
